As a university community, there are special houses--fraternity and sorority houses--through the community. This place was several times a family home. Once it was the Cates' home. Now it is a fraternity house.
The Huckleberry Trail is a first-class hiking and biking trail that was started from an abandoned railway line. The name is because the train went so slow, riders could jump off, pick huckleberries, and still get back on the train.
Local radio stations are fund-raising for Haiti by putting trucks at popular spots, such as near a restaurant by Virginia Tech, and asking people to fill up the truck. It was early in the day, but there was money in the truck.
The First Baptist Church on Clay St. was organized in 1874. According to the plaque on the side of the building by the bell tower, the building was built in 1943.
Several streams were important in the development of Blacksburg. Stroubles Creek, one of them, is still part of the landscape. It goes under the bridge in the middle of the photo.
Many decades ago, the Duck Pond froze enough to be used for ice skating. Since it has been cold, I thought I would see if it is frozen today. It was not frozen but this film crew was working and they seemed cold.
